Hayes Mx 2 mechanical disk brakes.

These are the brake set factory fitted to my kona, they are an entry level disk brake but on the whole they have given me good service. The main negative I would say are the brake cables as they lose tension quickly and need replacing. The rear cable requires constant cleaning,re-lubing and adjustment otherwise it binds up and sticks. The brakes are also noisy in the wet but I think this is common on all disk brakes.I have read some reviews on other sites which rip these brakes apart but I think they are a bit unfair, for a cheapish set of brakes on the whole they work well in all conditions and provided they are looked after will stop you going off the edge of a cliff!!!
Hayes Mag HD 8 With BFL Leavers
After running cable operated Hayes Mx 2 disc brakes I felt the need to upgrade to some Hydraulic aftermarket components. I searched high and low for an affordable alternative to my cable operated items. I found a set of Hayes Mag HD 8 disc brakes found on Ebay for a tidy sum of £87.00 inc P&P. I did some research before my purchase and found these to be highly rated and extremely powerful I'm currently running the larger disc on the front and the smaller original Hayes Mx 2 disc on the rear. The leavers are Big Fat Leavers and are operated using two fingers. The lever has a reach adjuster allowing the lever to be moved further away or closer depending on your preference this is adjusted with a small allen key. Installation was quick and simple and required no bleeding. Having tried these I have found the power very positive and proved to allow a lot of modulation which is something cable operated disc brakes do not offer. Another fantastic purchase which will improve and make my riding more enjoyable.
